Happy New Year, My Friend!
May 2019 be your best year EVER!
If you are part of the 40% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, congratulations!
New Year’s resolutions can be an important ritual. They remind us of the power of goals and why we can’t accomplish anything without something we actually want to achieve – AKA a goal.
In fact, goal setting is so important that I wrote a pretty SMART newsletter (pun intended!) on that topic titled ‘Would you like to join the 8% club?’ You can read it HERE.
The problem about the 8% club is that it’s only 8% … of New Year’s goal setters who ever actually achieve the goals they set.
Depressing isn’t it? I’m part of the 92%, so I should know.
Part of the problem is that often New Year’s goals are not really considered seriously.
Many are not grounded in a deep need for transformation. They are more of a wish, as in ‘it would be nice if …’, rather than a commitment.
But what if resolutions and goal setting were to become a part of your ongoing life project? And what if your life project was, say, to become the best person you can be? In that perspective, the New Year ritual would be nothing more than a time set apart to do a check-in with yourself, asking: Where am I in the main areas of my life, and where do I want to be by year’s end?
In our last newsletter, we started this process. We talked about how in order to GO somewhere we need to know WHERE we ARE. I provided you with an easy–to-do worksheet, call ‘A Year in Retrospect’. What did you find out? (You can find the worksheet HERE).
When I was a child, each time we were planning to go on a road trip, my dad would dig into his favorite drawer, pull out the appropriate map, and after a few minutes, he would put one finger where we were, and another where we wanted to go. Then he would announce, with an air of a man in charge: “With good traffic it will take 6 hours (or 4, or 10)!”
Today we use our GPS, but no matter the method, there is no getting around this basic truth: to know where we’re going, we need to know where we are.
The second part of this process will help you set the course of your New Year.
Today, you get to decide what is the ONE thing you want to change and improve in each area of your life, and reflect on how you feel about it.
I created the ONE Thing You Want To Change And Improve worksheet to help you with this process. Download it HERE. To help your juices going, you might want to go back to your ‘Year in retrospect’ worksheet… chances are that what you want to change in 2019 is what you rated the lowest in 2018.
Make it fun, do it with your loved ones, take as much time or as little time as you want… but don’t skip it! It's worth the little effort.
Want to share? I’d love to hear about your insight from this process. Simply email back to me or go to my FB page. It is a good and safe place to share.
And as always, my FREE Clarity Session is the best way to know where you are, where you want to be, and what’s your best next step.
And if nobody told you this year yet, I love you 😁!
Joyously Yours,
Véronique
